It may have looked like spring for a while with the gorgeous blooms poking through and the kerb-sides being a wash with the colour of tulips, daffodils and the green green grass. But I for one have been clinging on to my woollies and it’s more than a just-in-case scenario. It has been blinking freezing! This post came a little later than originally planned and has changed focus as it seemed out of sync with the recurring downpours and grey skies.

But, as another bank holiday weekend passes us by to mark the Coronation of King Charles III, I expect many of you struggled to be more jovial in style during the celebrations. I cannot be the only one who started out in a pretty dress only to change into something more practical rather swiftly.  Inevitably, social occasions move outdoors (Street Parties, BBQs, meet-ups with friends, walks in the countryside) but how do we transition our outfits to navigate the changeable weather? It’s all about setting the mood but ultimately being prepared. Here is how to dress for spring and its festivities in 4 easy steps:

Spring/summer clothing becomes lighter in fabric and lighter in colour too. The easiest way to freshen up your look is to switch one item in your outfit to a lighter shade. This could be using a stone wash or even white denim, a paler t-shirt or a lighter top layer like a blazer or cardigan.

The LMD Method is a great trick to help ensure your outfits are balanced. LMD stands for Light, Medium, and Dark. You probably do this a lot without really realising it. As long as you have a bit of colour contrast in your outfit, it doesn’t matter where your light item is.

Spring hues hold the dose of dopamine we all need to lift our mood after months of being cocooned and shivering in our sweaters. It’s not just people that have been analysed as the spring season that can have fun with colour in the springtime. Clothing becomes brighter in colour and prints more playful with florals, botanicals, ikat, spots and stripes to name a few.

If a full outfit of brighter colour is too much, bring a pop of colour with accessories, nails or lippy.

I wear a simple vest or camisole under everything. The ‘comfort cami’ came up in conversation this week and it got me thinking, why do I do this? Going back to the 00s when waistbands were low and I’d wear a long vest top under my outfit to keep flesh flashes at bay. I guess I’ve never really moved on from this and still pop a simple vest or cami under everything. There are a few benefits to adding hidden layers this way: feeling secure, smoothing lines and the all-important extra layer when temperatures are anything but tropical.
